What will Brent do for you?
Brent's Platform
What’s a Plebiscite?
It’s a public vote on one question.
This one asks Yukoners if we should keep our current voting system or switch to ranked voting.
Rooted in the Klondike, working for you: Brent was first drawn to Dawson over 30 years ago by the strong community. He and his wife Anna have intentionally chosen to raise their children here to give them a foundation in a community that is diverse, welcoming, and where individual contributions make a tangible difference to community life.
01
Education
Strong Schools, Supported Teachers, and Local Learning
Brent is passionate about quality education that inspires and engages. He is a strong advocate for school funding sufficient to support children and youth in all aspects of their learning and development.
Innovative, Engaging Education
Brent believes families should not have to leave Dawson to access interesting, engaging education programs for their children. As Co-Chair of the RSS School Council, Brent has supported local innovative education initiatives in Dawson by securing funding for programs such as the Klondike Experiential Education Program, audiovisual equipment, and a trades bursary.
As MLA he will:
- Work with families, educators, and TH Education to identify creative and diverse educational opportunities locally.
- Be a strong voice to garner support to implement such programs for children and youth.
Teacher and EA Support
- Ensure proper staffing and funding in Dawson classrooms.
- Guarantee that students who need extra help receive it.
Curriculum and Local Content
- Expand Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in content in school programs.
- Ensure students learn about where they live and the cultures that shape their community.
Mental Health in Schools
- Provide wraparound supports for children with complex needs.
- Deliver consistent, long-term help instead of short-term fixes.
Safe Facilities and Nutrition
- Ensure timely repair and maintenance of schools and playgrounds.
- Support school meal programs; children cannot learn if they are hungry.
Brent knows education is an investment in the future. Stronger schools today mean fewer social problems, healthier citizens, and better jobs tomorrow.
02
Childcare
Keeping Families Working and Kids Supported
Quality early childhood education in the community is critical for child development and the local economy. Dawson families are fortunate to have three daycare centres currently providing quality care, but there are still more children than childcare spaces. Red tape and lack of appropriate facilities threaten their continued operation. Brent will fight to keep existing spaces open and ensure more are built.
Expanding Access
- Ensure Dawson families have reliable childcare options.
- Support parents so they can work while ensuring kids can thrive.
- Push for progress on a new facility for Little Blue Daycare to ensure stable, long-term childcare space.
- Reduce barriers that delay facility development and funding.
Brent will work with Little Critters and Tr’inke Zho Daycare Centres to ensure their needs are met and they are adequately supported.
Brent has hands-on experience leading childcare initiatives. As former President of the Little Blue Daycare Board, he helped lower costs and paved the way for universal childcare in the Yukon. Accessible childcare keeps families working and the local economy strong.
03
Healthcare
Quality Care Close to Home
Everyone in Dawson deserves dependable healthcare without major barriers. Brent will advocate for visiting dental services, stronger local nurse and practitioner programs, and practical solutions that make care easier to reach.
Access to Dental Care
- Establish regular visiting dental services in Dawson.
Resident Nurses and Doctors
- Attract and retain more medical professionals who want to make Dawson their permanent home.
Medical Travel and Specialist Care
- Update travel assistance to reflect real costs for families.
- Support fair working conditions to attract and keep specialists.
Brent’s approach is simple: do it right the first time and save money while improving lives.
04
Energy
Affordable Power and a Self-Reliant Future
Energy must be reliable and affordable for households and businesses. Brent supports investing in clean, local power so benefits stay in Yukon communities.
Customer Service in Dawson
- Advocate for Yukon Energy to provide in-person service and regular meter readings.
Cost of Power and Renewable Growth
- Freeze rate hikes to help with affordability.
- Invest in renewable projects that reduce diesel use.
Expanding Grid Capacity
- Secure funding for upgrades that keep pace with growth and new generation.
Partnerships with First Nations
- Build projects with Yukon First Nations and local industry so benefits stay in the territory.
Energy independence starts with investment and partnerships that respect both the land and the people.
05
Housing
Building Homes and Local Opportunity
Dawson is growing and people need homes they can afford. Brent will speed up lot development, cut delays in permitting, and help Yukoners build equity through ownership—not just rentals.
Local Hiring and Apprenticeships
- Use values-based procurement requiring local hiring, fair wages, and apprenticeships.
- Support community-based trades training through partnerships between First Nations, unions, industry, and Yukon University.
Housing is the foundation for strong communities where people can build, stay, and thrive.
06
Local Economy
Jobs and the Local Economy
Local work should be done by local businesses and tradespeople. Brent will make procurement accessible and practical so Dawson companies can compete and grow.
Empowering Local Businesses
- Make government contracts accessible to small and local businesses by removing barriers.
- Support a stronger Chamber of Commerce to give small businesses a voice.
Decentralizing Jobs
- Move more government jobs to communities so people can live and work where they are rooted.
- Make remote and community-based roles a normal part of hiring, not an exception.
07
Mining
Mining and Resource Development
Placer mining is a cornerstone of the Klondike economy, and it must be responsible, transparent, and lawful. Brent recognizes the importance of balancing industry with the need to protect heritage and the environment.
Responsible Development
- Enforce rules and operating conditions for industry consistently.
- Protect people, land, water, and heritage values in every project.
Improving the Process
- Address regulatory bottlenecks and staffing gaps that delay permitting.
- Streamline steps without weakening environmental or cultural safeguards.
Modern Mineral Legislation
- Update mineral laws through open, public consultation.
- Make regulations living documents that adapt to today’s realities.
Brent believes miners should be part of the solution, working with Yukon and First Nation governments to develop sustainable practices that ensure land and water remain healthy for future generations.
08
Reconciliation
First Nations Relations and Reconciliation
Final and Self-Government Agreements are the floor, not the ceiling. These agreements were made on behalf of all Yukoners, and upholding them is not only a responsibility but a privilege undertaken for the benefit of all. Brent respects Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in as a sovereign government and is committed to working in equal partnership.
Partnership and Respect
- Advance TH priorities without gatekeeping or unnecessary delays.
- Listen first and let TH identify needs before setting government agendas.
- Co-develop projects and ensure benefits remain local.
The Klondike thrives when governments work together. Dawson and the Yukon Government can learn from TH’s community-driven leadership.
09
Climate
Environment and Climate Change
The climate is changing, and the Yukon must prepare and adapt while reducing harm. Brent will focus on practical steps that protect ecosystems, communities, homes, and livelihoods.
Resilient Communities
- Plan for permafrost thaw, floods, and fire.
- Invest in resilient infrastructure.
Sustainable Growth
- Invest in renewables aligned with responsible development.
- Encourage local stewardship and long-term planning.
Acknowledge the reality of climate change, adjust to it, and make choices that build resilience.
10
Cost Of Living
Cost of Living and Responsible Government
Life is getting more expensive, but government can help by spending smarter and focusing on what matters most.
Better Use of Public Money
- Redirect wasteful spending to housing, education, healthcare, emergency preparedness, and energy upgrades.
Preventive and Practical
- Invest in programs that save money over time, from school meals to energy efficiency.
- Be a better steward of public funds so every dollar benefits Yukoners.
Financial responsibility means choosing investments that strengthen communities instead of band-aid solutions that lead to more problems later on.
Understanding the Yukon Electoral Reform Plebiscite
The video above explains the upcoming plebiscite on electoral reform.
In 2024, Brent was one of 38 Yukoners selected for the Yukon Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. The group spent months learning and debating how we elect our government, and ultimately recommended adopting Ranked Voting.
Yukoners will have their say on this recommendation during the 2025 territorial election.
